Tired Eyes

The tired eyes
of people passing.
Their care-worn faces
portraying
the worry
fear
grief
pain
confusion
we all confront
in our individual lives
The sad song of the
tired eyes
of the people passing.
I wonder,
do I mirror the same?

Simplicity

I remember those days,
Those simplistic days
those days I spent with you
Without a thought for anything
but fun and the magic
of imagination.
We would dance and dream
until we smelled of sky and sun
But we never thought of what would be.
Now those days are gone
and the world now seems bleak in comparison
I wish I could have lived in those days forever
Dancing and dreaming
Until we smelled of sky and sun,
Now I dream of the time spent with you.

Thoughts

What does a thought look like?
Is it the silver-grey
of the full moon
shrouded in mist?
Or are they
spun gold,
the thread of a golden spider spinning
its web?
Or are they
silky blackness
the invisible darkness
of a fluttering bat?
Could they be
the rainbow colors
of inspiration?
Yes.

Three Genre Story (Assignment)

Henry Dow has been in this institution since the age of 15. No one quite knew what went wrong upstairs, but now he’s stuck here forever. All he does is sit in his room, staring at the wall like all the answers to the world’s questions are written on it. I have been taking care of him since I was about 15 as well, it seems crazy that it has been six years since I first started coming here. Not a lot has changed in my life or here at the mental institution. The institution is always such a timeless place, that you barely realize the years going by. Today is the day that I decide to get him, and myself, out of here.

I casually stroll into his room, reassuring him as I guide him into his wheel chair. “We’re going for a walk okay Henry?” As usual, he doesn't reply. I wheel him outside, waving to the passing nurses and patients. We walk into the garden. This is where the hard part starts.

“Henry, can you stand up please?” As I help him, he slowly stands. I ask him to climb the vines growing up the relatively low wall. Henry starts up the wall, gets about three feet up and falls back, right on top of me. “Oof! Get off me and try again!”

I’m starting to loose my cool again. That’s why I have to leave this place too. I don’t have the patience or mindset for this kind of work. The only reason I’m here is because I keep making mistakes. Ever since I was in middle school I’ve been making stupid mistakes like graffiting the school or beating up someone who really deserved it. Even when I tried my hardest to be good I always goofed up and ended up with more community service here. They actually pay me now because I’m here all the time, not to mention I connect to the patients in a way that not many of the other nurses can. I too feel trapped in myself, and this institution no one really likes. The only good part of my day is talking to Henry. He always listens, and never judges. He’ll do what I ask him to and no more. I do the same when someone asks me to do something.

But now I just need to get him over this wall! After we get out of here we can do whatever we want, move to Cuba, visit the Great Wall of China, or play our luck at Vegas, if it wasn't for this wall, we would already be flying!”Up, up! Try one more time!” Finally, he makes it over the wall. Yesss! I thought, Home free! However, I wasn't out of the woods yet. I still had to get him into my smart car and get the heck out of this place.

The Classified Ad (a fiction story)

I have an inward hate of old people. People above 55 deserve to die. Their stench alone grosses me out. That is why I created "The Apartment." Those oldies above 55 never come out. Some say this is manslaughter. I say, this is justice. My classidied add brought many coustomers to my new death machine. One by one "The Apartment" chewed their brittle bones and rid the world of their wrinkly oldness and old person smell.
Soon many old people were flocking to the call of  “GORGEOUS BRAND NEW APTS Free Rent! $0 Deposit! Come see our amazing facility!” Each of them smiled as they laid eyes on the rooms perfectly suited to their old persony needs. Little did they know that this was no ordinary old folks home. This place was living. And they would die here.
Today another elderly woman would be coming to see her new site of death. Her name was Rose, and she was 86 years old. Lately she had been living with her son and his family, but she had finally saved up enough money to move into her dream place. I went out to meet her , and was surprised to see that she was very fit, and attractive for an old person. Not to mention she smelled like vanilla, not like old people at all.
“Hello.” I greeted her as she approached the apartment door.
“Hi.” She said in a voice that sounded nothing like the usual raspy voice of those her age.
“If you want to follow me inside, I’ll show you around. After you move in you can fix it to your liking.” I told her as we stepped through the door.
She gasped as she looked around the living room, “This is magnificent!” She exclaimed.  “ I love it! I’ll move in right away!”
“Deal!” I replied. “You’ll move in on this coming Monday if that’s all right with you.”
“That sounds perfect! I look forward to living here.” With that last statement, she turned and left.

MONDAY
Monday morning came along and I was waiting at the apartment to greet her and help her get situated. As I was helping her unpack her stuff I noticed a small box that was very heavy for its size.
“What’s in here?” I asked.
She replied, “A piece of the past. Go ahead and open it if you want.” I opened it. Inside were two gold Olympic track medals and one silver.
“Wow!” I couldn’t help gaping at her like a child. “You won all of these?”
“I sure did Johnny!”
“It’s Jonathan.” I quickly corrected her. She just laughed and continued unpacking. After unpacking she asked me if I would like a cup of tea.
While drinking my warm cup of tea I look over and see the face of this lovely elderly lady peering at me. My heart thumped. What was this? Am I really falling for this amazingly sweet Rose? Glancing at her face again I realized that must be the case. But I am sending her to her death! How could I do such a thing?! If I’m falling for her, does that mean I now need to save her?
I decided right that moment to try to persuade her to move right out and in with her son again. “Doesn’t your son live far away from here? Maybe you should move back in with him. What about your grandchildren? Won’t they miss you? It’s a bad decision moving into this apartment.”
“Don’t be silly Johnny! Moving into this apartment will be great for me! I’ll get to live alone for the first time in a long time, and I’ll get to spend time with you.”
“But, but, but....” Rose leaned over and kissed me. “What?!”
“Don’t argue with me, Johnny. I’m staying.” She smiled and I wasn’t sure what to say. At that, we sat and drank tea together. We laughed and when I finally looked at the clock I realized a few hours had gone by.
“I have to go now Rose, but thank you for a lovely time.” This was bad news. I couldn’t convince her to leave and no one had lasted for over a month in this apartment. I have thirty days to make her want to move. What could I possibly do to convince my lovely Rose.  As I sat at home I wondered about what I could do. What I should do to save her. Nothing was coming to mind until finally I thought of the solution. I’ll marry her! Then she’ll have to leave her apartment and stay with me! Then I could destroy that killer, and live out the rest of my life with Rose in happiness!
A week passed, then two. Rose and I spent more and more time together, both at her deadly apartment and my cosy condo. Then on a date to a romantic movie I “popped the question” so to speak. “Rose, will you marry me?”
“I don’t have very long to live Johnny, you know that. You wouldn’t be able to be happy after I die.”
“But darling I can’t be happy at all unless I’m with you. And
nothing could possibly make me a happier man.”
“If you insist Johnny. You know I love you just as much, and nothing could make me happier either.”

A Very Short Time Later
“Do you Jonathan, take you Rose, to be your lawfully wedded wife?”
“I do.”
“And do you Rose take Jonathan to be your husband?”
“I do.”
“You may kiss the bride.”
After the wedding Rose moved into my condo almost immediately. She was safe from the apartment, which I tore down, and I was happy for a few months. Until she started to get sick.
Rose was very critically ill for a week, then sadly she passed from this life. I was alone again, but I had bigger problems to deal with besides my grief.
The police had reopened the case of all the elderly people who had passed away. I was prime suspect in their murder. In the court case I plead guilty, knowing it was my fault and ready to accept my punishment. Maybe if Rose had still been alive I would have fought the sentence, but she was dead and I had nothing left to live for.
I got a life sentence because of my foolishness. So now I’m stuck here for the rest of my life, waiting for death and my Rose to come and bring me to the other side.

My New Page

A new sheet,
A page turned,
A chance to start over.
You can fill it yourself,
With whatever you want,
A tale of queens and knights,
An epic poem of great lovers.
But this is my new page,
And I choose to fill it
with thoughts of you

Flower

The spring unfolded
bringing new grace.
The life, once dead
now resurrected.
The unsurpassable beauty
of a new flower
Slowly blooming
to its newfound potential
A dead rock nevermore

Darkness (Assignment)

Darkness never just walks into a room. Darkness creeps in from the corner. Darkness may be in the room, but his presence is slow to affect all others in the room. He introduces Fear and Doubt to many who meet him. There is a point where Darkness’ presence is unbearable, and you must seek for Light, his enemy.

Darkness and Light can never be present at the same time. When Light runs into a room like she typically does, Darkness speedily vanishes. However, Darkness and Light are not always opposites. Light can at times be just as fear inspiring asdark. Light’s harshness at times makes those in her presence search for the stillness that Darkness casts over everything.

Darkness is changed dramatically depending on who he is with. Always he looks the same, dark hair, dark eyes, and milky white skin. He wears a black over-sized sweatshirt  over his black cargo pants and shirt reminiscent of his friend Death. But Darkness’ attitude and effect on others can change drastically. Sometimes Darkness curls and purrs like a sleek black cat. Other times Darkness is a weight, pulling on your clothes and dragging you back, making your progress slow.

Careful is most always accompanies Darkness. She makes sure that Reckless rarely comes around when Darkness is present. When Reckless and Darkness are together Danger soon joins them and they become a terrible threesome to behold. When they are together, nothing good happens. Cars are broken into, windows are smashed, mistakes are made, and the only thing that can stop them is Light and Justice, ready to bring Consequence and commend them for their mistakes.
